Malignant lymphoma on parotid gland: a clinical case

Abstract: Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma on the parotid gland is a relatively rare occurrence among head and neck tumors. The mass of parotid gland lymphoma cannot be distinguished from other benign masses of the parotid gland; therefore, it is important to consider lymphoma in the differential diagnosis when examining parotid swellings and masses. Parotid gland lymphoma is most likely to be B-cell, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of one of three types, which include follicular, marginal zone, and diffuse large B-cell, although other hi… Show more

“…As Park et al [10] stated in their case report of parotid lymphoma, the standard surgical procedure for PFL requires en bloc excision of the mass with superficial parotidectomy. This is because direct infiltration into the parotid gland parenchyme is occasionally found in postoperative pathology, although PFL is not a true parotid gland neoplasm [4,11]. Due to the patient’s young age and well-differentiated cellular morphology, local radiotherapy rather than systemic chemotherapy was chosen for adjuvant treatment.…”

“…[11] This gland may be either continuous with or separated from the main parotid gland. [11] Among the tumors that may arise in the parotid gland, NHL only accounts for 1% to 4%, [1,4] with subtypes including follicular lymphoma, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, and MALT lymphoma. [6] Of these subtypes, development of MALT lymphoma in the parotid gland is rare [1,5] ; further, its development in the accessory parotid gland is especially rare, and such cases have scarcely been reported.…”
