Malignant lacrimal sac tumors

Abstract: Malignant epithelial lacrimal sac tumors are rare cancers with significant recurrence rates. Correct diagnosis and appropriate therapy require a multidisciplinary management approach. Treatment of these malignant epithelial tumors is first and foremost complete surgical removal with wide excision.

“…The cribriform pattern is the most common and associated with the best prognosis, whereas the solid type is less frequent but has a poorer prognosis (3,7,8) . The most appropriate approach to the management of lacrimal sac tumors depends more on the tumoral size and the general condition of the patient rather than the histological type (5) . The classical treatment of malignant lacrimal sac tumors has been complete excision of the tumor and lacrimal drainage system, including the canaliculi and nasolacrimal duct, followed by radiotherapy and/or adjuvant chemotherapy (1,9) .…”

“…Lacrimal sac is the closed upper end of the nasolacrimal duct and has a fibro-elastic wall lined internally by mucosa that is continuous with the conjunctiva through the lacrimal canaliculi and within the nasal mucosa through the nasolacrimal duct (1).primary lacrimal sac tumors are rare compared to other orbital tumors. Early treatment of these tumors is essential because they tend to be infiltrating tumors.…”
