Malignant Hemangioendothelioma

Abstract: These findings suggested, that rIL-2 not only induces lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cells and NK cells, but also facilitates these cytotoxic cells to adhere to MHE cells by enhancing ICAM-1 expression of tumor cells.

“…Systemic administration of high dose recombinant interleukin-2 (rIL-2) has been shown to inhibit pulmonary metastasis of angiosarcoma of the skin [17]. The mechanism of rIL-2 is thought to involve direct inhibition of tumor cells and activation of natural killer cells and lymphokine-activated killer cells [4,18]. Two chemotherapeutic combinations have demonstrated partial and full effects: doxorubicin/ifofsamide and docetaxel/gemcitabine.…”

“…Angiosarcoma of the scalp is an aggressive tumor characterized by a rapid and fatal process. Treatment for this tumor is composed of excision, radiation, polychemotherapy, and immunotherapy, in which rIL‐2 is often used 1,4 . The therapeutic mechanism of rIL‐2 in AS is thought to involve the direct effect and activation of NK cells and LAK cells, although the activity of these immune cells is often of a low level in elderly patients 1 .…”

“…Local injections of recombinant interleukin‐2 (rIL‐2) is known to improve the prognosis of angiosarcoma of the scalp (AS) 1 . In addition, it is thought to have a direct effect on tumor cells, and can activate natural killer (NK) cells and lymphokine activated killer (LAK) cells.…”

“…Recombinant interleukin-2 brings out lymphokineactivated killer (LAK) cells and natural killer (NK) cells, and makes these cytotoxic cells increase ICAM-1 expression to stick easily to neoplastic cells. There are many reports (5,7) in which interleukin-2 has been effective for angiosarcoma, usually partially.…”
