“…There followed a phase of intensive study of the pathology of the disease distinguished by Wegener's work in 1936 and1939. A discussion on malignant granuloma of the nose in this Section in December 1954 may perhaps be considered to have brought this phase to a close (Glass 1955, Howells 1955, Friedmann 1955. It was followed by the publication of many clinical and pathological papers as the disease has become more familiar to otolaryngologists and pathologists from personal experience.…”

“…Ludman (1964) suggested that jnidline granuloma might be a basic immune type of tissue response to differing pathological stimuli, which in some cases might be a neo-_plasm. Whatever the nature of the relationship it may be a cause of difficulty for the clinician, not least because of the view that the correct treatment for midline granuloma is radiotherapy giving approximately 1,000 rads in five weeks (Glass, 1955;Howells, 1955;Dickson, i960), while the correct treatment for localized reticulum cell sarcoma is radiotherapy in much higher dosage. The histology reports in these patients were provided by the Bland-Sutton Institute of Pathology, and in the interests of ensuring that this is truly a homogeneous group of tumours all the slides have been reviewed by Dr. D. A. Brew.…”

“…This is a feature which is hard to explain and is in complete contrast to Wegener's granulomatosis, where weakness and prostration are early signs. The great majority ofpatients die from sepsis or heemorrhage, though X-ray, particularly in small doses, has been used successfully (Glass 1955, Howells 1955, Ellis 1955, Walton 1958).…”
