Malignancies in human immunodeficiency virus infected patients in India: Initial experience in the HAART era

Abstract: Background & objectives:Limited data are available on malignancies in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients from India. We undertook this study to assess the frequency and spectrum of malignancies in HIV-infected adult patients during the first eight years of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) rollout under the National ART Programme at a tertiary care centre in New Delhi, India. Methods:Retrospective analysis of records of patients registered at the ART clinic between May 2005 and Dece… Show more

“…Chitale22 has reported that NHL perhaps affects 2 per cent of HIV infected individuals in India. Another study from a tertiary care hospital in north India reported frequency of malignancies in HIV infected adult patients to be about 1 per cent (26/2598)23. They found 16 cases with NHL and three carcinoma cervix.…”

“…6 Most common malignancy in Indian HIV patients was NHL according to previous studies. 5,6 In our study, the most common malignancies in HIV positive patients were carcinoma cervix, HNNC, carcinoma breast, carcinoma penis and anal canal and rectum cancers. Other malignancies like testicular cancer, Hodgkin's lymphoma, vaginal cancer, pancreatic cancer and acute leukaemia were not seen in our study.…”

“…The available literature on Indian patients is from small studies. 5 The incidence of malignancy in HIV patients is higher than general population, as they are more prone for maligancy. [1][2][3][4] The spectrum of malignancies in our study is different from that noted in other studies, which were also single institute studies.…”

“…7 e literature suggests that worldwide, malignancies are encountered in about 30% patients with HIV-AIDS, but that percentage di ers sharply from that encountered in India, where it is less than 5%. 8 is may partly be explained by opportunistic infections such as tuberculosis in Indian patients, which remains the leading cause of death in the HIV-AIDS population. In our study, we retrospectively analyzed the pattern of malignancies in patients with HIV-AIDS.…”

“…Although few studies have quoted NHL as the predominant malignancy in their patients with HIV-AIDS, the predominant malignancy was cervical cancer in our patient population, as seen in few other studies. [8][9][10] Head and neck malignancies also continue to be common malignancies in men with HIV-AIDS. 10 us, an increase in malignancies induced by the human papillomavirus (HPV) can be seen in this group of patients.…”
