The force exerted by the tongue and perioral structures has been found to have great significance in all disciplines in dentistry. Investigators have been concerned principally with the magnitude and duration of the force exerted during deglutition. However, this does not give a complete picture in terms of potential energy expended on the dentition. In any study involving the quantification of tongue and perioral forces, a method of determining the frequency of deglutition is essential. Also to be considered is the pattern of deviate deglutition referred to as tongue thrusting. Any program concerning itself with the total force application by the tongue and perioral musculature during deglutition must, of necessity, concern itself with the frequency of force application over a period of time in both normal swallowers and tongue thrusters.The purpose of this study was to determine frequency of deglutition in a group of tongue thrusters and a group of normal control subjects, i.e., non-tongue thrusters.Kincaid' appears to be the only one to have studied the frequency of deglutition. He found no references to previous scientific data although crude estimates had been proposed. By means of a pressure transducer activated by the thryoid cartilage and recorded on a kymograph, he has shown a wide range of variation between individuals and the tendency of an individual to maintain a rather stable rate of deglutition. Although his work was related to the degree of incisal overbite, appraisal of the frequencyof deglutition itself shows a mean rate of 50 swallows per hour, with a range of from 10 to 138 times per hour. Other references to the frequency of deglutition are found in the literature. Graber2 has stated: "The average individual swallows about once per minute between meals and as frequently as 9 times a minute during eating. Even during sleep the swallowing act is performed at infrequent intervals. Figuring conservatively that meals consume an hour a day with five swallows per minute during this period and that a man sleeps eight hours and swallows twice per hour during this time and once a minute during the balance, even a relatively inactive person swallows over 1,200 times a day." An estimate of 2,400 swallows per day has been given by Straub,3 but neither Straub nor Graber has discussed the method utilized to substantiate their statements. Objective: this article aims at reviewing the relationship between early weaning and its consequences to oral motor development, focusing on the consequences to occlusion, breathing and children's oral motor aspects.Sources: a literature review based on Medline database from the early 60's up to 2001 was performed taking into consideration the following topics: pediatrics, dentistry and speech language pathology.Summary of the findings: based on this review of literature, we could verified that early weaning may lead to a proper oral motor development rupture, which may cause negative consequences to swallowing, breathing and speaking activities as well as malocclusion, oral breathing and oral motor disorders.Conclusions: in addition to several benefits of breastfeeding, it contributes to a proper oral motor development and also avoids speech-language disorders, regarding oral motor system. J Pediatr (Rio J) 2003;79(1):7-12: early weaning, breastfeeding, oral motor development, sucking, malocclusion, oral breathing. ResumoObjetivo: revisar as estreitas relações entre o desmame precoce e seus reflexos no desenvolvimento motor-oral, enfocando as conseqüências na oclusão, respiração e aspectos motores orais da criança. Síntese dos dados: a partir da literatura levantada, pode-se observar que o desmame precoce pode levar à ruptura do desenvolvimento motor-oral adequado, podendo prejudicar as funções de mastigação, deglutição, respiração e articulação dos sons da fala, ocasionar má oclusão, respiração oral e alteração motora oral.Conclusões: pode-se concluir que além dos inúmeros benefíci-os do aleitamento materno, este contribui para o desenvolvimento motor-oral adequado e previne alterações fonoaudiológicas, no que se refere ao sistema motor-oral.

Aim: Breast-feeding promotes several benefits in childhood, among them favoring the nasal breathing. In the present study, the relationship between breathing pattern and the history of breast-feeding and of deleterious oral habits was determined. Study design: clinical with transversal cohort. Material and Method: The study population consisted of 62 children ranging in age from 3 years and 3 months to 6 years and 11 months who were submitted to otorhinolaryngologic evaluation to determine nasal and mouth breathers and to a speech language pathologic interview. The otorhinolaryngologic evaluation involved the following exams: anterior rhinoscopy, oroscopy and radiologic examination. The parents of the children were questioned about the form of feeding (natural and/or artificial), the duration of breast-feeding and the presence of deleterious oral habits (suction and biting). The Fisher exact test was used to compare groups regarding the presence and absence of habits and the different periods of breast-feeding. Results: The breast-feeding period was longer among nasal breathers and was concentrated in the period between 3 and 6 months of age. Regarding the use of bottle, the results showed that most of the children in both groups used this type of feeding during the first years of life, with no significant difference between groups (p=0.58). There was a marked presence of deleterious oral habits among mouth breathers, with a statistically significant difference between groups regarding suction (p=0.004) and biting habits (p=0.0002). Conclusion: Mouth breathing children were breast-fed for a shorter period of time and had a history of deleterious oral habits compared to nose breathers.
