“…The men were strongly committed to the socially ascribed, gendered role of 'breadwinner' (Chesley, 2011;Hibbins, 2005), thus conforming with socially and historically constructed patriarchal and structural norms (Miller, 2011). These findings illustrate that the breadwinner role is important in shaping the male identity, which is deeply rooted in production relations and is part of the broader social construction of western patriarchy (Catalá et al, 2012;Donaldson & Howson, 2009;Kofman, 2004). The adult male role and identity is synonymous with responsibility as the economic provider for the family (Anthias, 2012a;Miller, 2011).…”

“…Critical studies of men and masculinities have burgeoned in the past two decades but little is known about generational masculinities, and the few studies examining the cross-generational transformation in masculinities have focused on heterosexual rather than gay masculinities (e.g., Català et al 2012; Hearn et al 2012; Inhorn and Wentzell 2011). Similarly, little research in the emerging field of generational sexuality studies (Plummer 2010) focuses on generational masculinities.…”
