Abstract: Investigates male attitudes towards healthy eating and makes comparisons with a group of women of similar age and socio-economic status. Claims the results indicate that men are less likely to use books and magazines as a source of nutrition information and are less likely to buy or eat products advertised as "low calorie", "diet" or "lite". “…Healthy food may be considered more expensive to purchase than junk food, a factor identified as a barrier to healthy eating in research conducted by the Canadian Diabetes Association (2002). There is evidence to suggest that people in low income groups spend proportionally more of their income on food than those in higher income groups (Ralph et al, 1996). “…Research has shown that males hold more negative attitudes than females towards making dietary changes (Lloyd et al, 1993;Steptoe et al, 1995), and more positive attitudes towards high fat foods (Shepherd & Stockley, 1985). It therefore follows that men may be less likely to consume`diet' and low fat products (Ralph et al, 1996). As men constitute an important target for health promotion, a greater understanding of the influence of nutritional knowledge and attitudes in this population is needed.…”
