MALDI-TOF MS in the Microbiology Laboratory: Current Trends

Abstract: Within less than a decade matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) has become a gold standard for microbial identification in clinical microbiology laboratories. Besides identification of microorganisms the typing of single strains as well as the antibiotic and antimycotic resistance testing has come into focus in order to speed up the microbiological diagnostic. However, the full potential of MALDI-TOF MS has not been tapped yet and future technological advan… Show more

“…Identification and diagnosis of affected patients as well as implementation of isolation measures would be greatly facilitated in the case of routine introduction of rapid protein acquisition and analysis, which has a positive impact on patient management and public health (Idelevich et al, 2018;Rodríguez-Sánchez et al, 2019). Preventing the spreading of infection and increasing the curative ratio is very important for the rapid detection, timely treatment and modern disease management of Salmonellosis (Tae-Hoon Kim et al, 2017;Schubert & Kostrzewa, 2017). According to Dieckmann and Malorny (2011), MALDI-TOF MS is the recommended method for clinical practice, based on its reliability, speed and affordability.…”

“…After incubation at 37 • C for 72 h in an anaerobic jar, strict anaerobes were chosen. Thereafter, after grown on both culture plates, identification of the different colonies was performed by Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), an innovative technology for the rapid and accurate identification of bacterial and fungal isolates in clinical settings [16]. MALDI-TOF technology has been developed to profile, within minutes instead of the usually required 36-48 h of the traditional approaches, based on the pure culture of the microorganism, bacterial proteins from whole cell extracts and to obtain a bacterial fingerprint able to discriminate microorganisms from different genera and species [17].…”
