Malassezia, dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis: an overview

Abstract: From their original description, fungi of the genus Malassezia (previously Pityrosporum) have been associated with dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis. The principle evidence on which this connection was based was that the organisms were present, often in high numbers, on the skin in these conditions and that both responded to treatment that inhibited or destroyed Malassezia yeasts. The availability of new tools such as genomic and proteomic analyses has begun to provide a new insight into the pathogenetic mec… Show more

“…This response is similar to that described by O'Brien upon applying lanolin to lesions of miliaria with subsequent clearing of lesions and resumption of sweat production [23]. Seborrheic dermatitis is also effectively treated with topical steroids [24]. As in eczema, gentle bathing and skin care habits also appear to have an ameliorating effect on these conditions.…”

“…However, in some cases it remains limited. Based on these considerations and some other studies the data has emphasized the role of age, gender, skin grease, personal health and visiting public (local) saunas on the development of tinea versicolor (5,10,11,13,(15)(16)(17)21). Finally, it should be noted that sometimes a combination of different causes such as race, endocrine abnormality, pregnancy had a role on the development of tinea versicolor (26,29).…”

“…The causative fungus being found mainly in the seborrheic areas of the body plays a major role in the pathogenesis of psoriasis to excite immunological reactions (15,17). Tinea versicolor presents with various morphological patterns such as chromic, papular and erythematous lesions and also a combination of these patterns; therefore lesions are pigmented in various colors including red, brown, white or yellowish.…”

“…Bunun yanında Lezyonlu deride Malassezia tarafından üretilen oleik asit ve malassezin gibi diğer inflamatuar moleküller bulunmuştur. Oleik asit skuam oluşumunu indük-lerken, malassezin kontakt sensitizasyon yapan aryl hidrokarbon reseptörlerine bağlanarak immünostimulasyon yapar (13). Antifungal tedavi ile gerileyen hastalık ilacın kesilmesi ile sıklıkla tekrarlar.…”
