Malar Augmentation

Abstract: Findings support the contention that the Silastic midfacial malar implant is a safe and effective alloplastic alternative to treat malar hypoplasia and facial asymmetry. The complication and revision rates are acceptable. Relative technical ease of insertion makes malar augmentation an excellent adjunct for rhytidectomy and rhinoplasty.

“…We documented that this operation is safe, has a limited complication rate, and provides satisfactory and durable results in most patients. Based on our experience, we suggest that the application of implants can greatly improve the aesthetic result with a small amount of effort, 27,[34][35][36][37][38][39] especially during face-lift procedures, and this is true when implants are placed through the same rhytidoplasty incision. Our considerable experience supports the use of malar implants for rhytidectomies.…”

“…The second purpose of this study was to emphasize the superiority of the preauricular approach for implant placement during rhytidectomy. Most experienced surgeons advocating the use of facial implants 2,9,[36][37][38] also prefer the intraoral route while performing a face-lift procedure. This approach, which is still preferred by us for isolated augmentation malarplasty (not associated with a face-lift procedure), has various disadvantages:…”

“…A key feature of the female face is triangulation of the cheeks in relation to the chin, with prominent, well-defined cheeks imparting a heart-shaped appearance 3,9 . For transfeminine individuals, this look can be achieved with malar augmentation via autologous fat transfer or prosthetic implants 10 . Autologous fat transfer is a viable option for patients who only desire a minor enhancement, whereas prosthetic implants offer a more predictable long-term aesthetic outcome for those requiring a major enhancement 11 .…”

“…Facial implants represent an attractive strategy for addressing the aging face and rehabilitating prior injury . Commonly used in conjunction with other procedures, facial implants promote increased definition in the mental and malar regions, leading to a youthful appearance and enhancing the nose-chin relationship . Although these procedures are generally considered safe, the true incidence of complications may be difficult to ascertain.…”

To our knowledge, there have been no large-scale analyses of related adverse events.…”
