“…However, convincing evidence of the similarity of the reported structures to MG bodies was not published in either paper. Csapo et al (1975) have reported the most significant experimental work to date. Boivin antigen (lipopolysaccharide extract of E. coli) was injected into either the kidney or testis of rats and after 8 days, structures formed in macrophages which by histochemical and ultrastructural evidence bore a close resemblance to MG bodies.…”

“…In the latter case, two modes of dissemination of the condition from one site to another were possible: the E. coli were carried from one place to another through a hematogenous route during one of the episodes of bacteremia; and/or macrophages containing viable E. coli were responsible for dissemination of the disease to the secondary site. Malakoplakic cells in the veins have been reported by others (Yunis et al, 1967;Csapo et al). A simultaneous involvement of colon and mesenteric lymph nodes in some reported cases would suggest that spread of the condition could also occur through a lymphogenous route (Gonzales-Angulo et al, 1965;Yunis et al).…”

“…Similarly, the microorganisms have been repeatedly demonstrated in the lesional tissues with the light microscope (von Hansemann; Bleisch and Konikov;Yunis et al;Green, 1968;Rao, 1969;DiSilvio and Bartlett, 1971;Wildey and Rubel, 1972;Moore et al, 1973;van der Walt et al, 1973;Lou and Teplitz;Lewin et al, 1976). E. coli are now being more readily recognised at the ultrastructural level (Finlay-Jones et al, 1968;Rao, 1971;Ranchod and Kahn, 1972;Csapo et al, 1973;McClurg et al;An et al, 1974;Lou and Teplitz;Scheiner et al, 1975;Lewin el al., 1976). Their identification is facilitated with the electron microscope, especially when in varying stages of degradation and, therefore, beyond recognition with the light microscope.…”
