Making spherical GEMs

Abstract: We developed a method to make GEM foils with a spherical geometry. Tests of this procedure and with the resulting spherical GEMs are presented. Together with a spherical drift electrode, a spherical conversion gap for x-rays can be formed. This would eliminate the parallax error in an x-ray diffraction setup, which limits the spatial resolution at wide diffraction angles. The method is inexpensive and flexible towards possible changes in the design. We show advanced plans to make a prototype of an entirely sph… Show more

“…A curved chamber with 1-D readout was made to provide a parallax-error-free [8] X-ray diffraction spectrometer for station 1W1A of the Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility (BSRF). The X-ray energy of the 1W1A station is 8.05 keV and 13.5 keV, and the 8.05 keV X-ray intensity is higher than 10 11 photons/s.…”

“…A detailed description of the method with which spherical gems are made can be found in [11], [12], here we only give an overview. For the manufacturing of a spherical gem we start with a flat gem foil.…”
