Making marks meaningful: new materialism and the microwear assemblage

Abstract: In this paper we explore how positioning microwear analysis within new materialism and assemblage theory allows us to develop new ways of thinking about meaning in the past. By mapping the detailed histories of an object's making and use, we suggest that we can open up an understanding of marks as forms of material meanings. These material meanings operate as intensive events that fold together present and absent materials, as well as a range of ongoing processes. By studying marks on an archaeological object … Show more

“…Third, we situate these approaches within a new materialist approach (Tsoraki et al . 2020). This emphasises both the vibrancy of matter—as always in motion and contributing to the production of the world—and that materials make a fundamental contribution to history (Crellin 2020; Harris 2021).…”

“…We work with objects to learn from them, and with them, about their pasts. Following Deleuze (2004), our laboratory techniques work to actualise virtual histories that are part of these objects (Tsoraki et al, 2021). Drawing on the concepts of the virtual and actual from Deleuze and Guattari (2004) and DeLanda ( 2002) we can see how new techniques allow new possibilities to emerge for actualising virtual pasts; from isotopic analyses to chemical composition each new technique reveals different aspects of the pasts of ancient objects.…”
