Making database systems usable

Abstract: Database researchers have striven to improve the capability of a database in terms of both performance and functionality. We assert that the usability of a database is as important as its capability. In this paper, we study why database systems today are so difficult to use. We identify a set of five pain points and propose a research agenda to address these. In particular, we introduce a presentation data model and recommend direct data manipulation with a schema later approach. We also stress the importance … Show more

“…These also suffer from problems of linguistic variability and ambiguities. Similarly, the search engine can be used on the top of database approach, but these suffer from the lack of returning precise and accurate answers [19]. Thus, these approaches provide inadequate support to express a query.…”

“…Jagadish et al recently illustrated 5 painful issues in database usability [13]. Among them, the birthing pain is related to the difficulties of creating a database and putting information into a database.…”

“…Similarly, schema visualization literature (see [32] for a survey) shows both (1) what parts of schemas are crucial to initial understanding and (2) what parts of schemas must then be revealed. Others have motivated that databases need to be more usable [33] in general, which shows that these types of problems are broadly felt throughout databases.…”
