Making data analysis expertise broadly accessible through workflows

Abstract: The demand for advanced skills in data analysis spans many areas of science, computing, and business analytics. This paper discusses how non-expert users reuse workflows created by experts and representing complex data mining processes for text analytics. They include workflows for document classification, document clustering, and topic detection, all assembled from components available in well-known text analytics software libraries. The workflows expose to non-experts expert-level knowledge on how these indi… Show more

“…Projects like [37] assist the user very thoroughly through the creation of workflows, but are restricted to curated application domains (data mining pipelines in the case of [37]). Ultimately, user input is needed to sort out non-modeled requirements and fill in uncaptured knowledge and know-how.…”

“…This capability to experiment by including or excluding certain modules and adjusting parameters is exactly the kind of ability the final product will enable law enforcement agents to utilize. The ability to change configuration and include different methods is shown in [9], where high school interns utilized workflow fragments to experiment with a wide variety of experimental setups and customizations. Workflows allow us to prototype faster, include or exclude multiple methods, parallelize for big data use, scale up in terms of data and processing, and allow experimenting with various setups and different parameter values.…”
