Workflows are increasingly adopted to describe large-scale data-and compute-intensive processes that can take advantage of today's Distributed Computing Infrastructures. Still, most Scientific Workflow formalisms are notoriously difficult to fully exploit, as they entangle the description of scientific processes and their implementation, blurring the lines between what is done and how it is done as well as between what is and what is not infrastructure-dependent.This work addresses the problem of data-intensive Scientific Workflow design by describing scientific experiments at a higher level of abstraction, emphasizing scientific concepts over technicalities, easing the separation of functional and nonfunctional concerns and leveraging domain knowledge.To achieve this goal, we propose a model-driven approach enhanced with Knowledge Engineering technologies. The main contributions of this work are a semantic Scientific Workflow model to capture user goals and a generative process assisting the transformation from high-level models to executable workflow artefacts.

Analyzing web content, particularly multimedia content, for security applications is of great interest. However, it often requires deep expertise in data analytics that is not always accessible to non-experts. Our approach is to use scientific workflows that capture expert-level methods to examine web content. We use workflows to analyze the image and text components of multimedia web posts separately, as well as by a multimodal fusion of both image and text data. In particular, we re-purpose workflow fragments to do the multimedia analysis and create additional components for the fusion of the image and text modalities. In this paper, we present preliminary work which focuses on a Human Trafficking Detection task to help deter human trafficking of minors by thus fusing image and text content from the web. We also examine how workflow fragments save time and effort in multimedia content analysis while bringing together multiple areas of machine learning and computer vision. We further export these workflow fragments using linked data as web objects.

Abstract-In this paper, we demonstrate the ability to reuse workflow fragments in different data domains: from text analytics to image anlysis to video activity recognition. We highlight how the re-use of workflows allows scientists to link across disciplines and avail themselves of the benefits of interdisciplinary research beyond their normal area of expertise. In addition, we present an in-depth study of a Social Media Analysis (SMA) task, wherein we show how the re-use of workflow fragments can extend a pre-existing, rudimentary analysis; we also examine how workflow fragments save time and effort in SMA while bringing together multiple areas of machine learning and computer vision.
