Making Americans Feel Great Again? Personal Significance Predicts Political Intentions of Losers and Winners of the 2016 U.S. Election

Abstract: Reactions of losers and winners of political elections have important consequences for the political system during times of power transition. In four studies conducted immediately before and after the 2016 U.S. presidential elections, we investigated how personal significance induced by success or failure of one's candidate is related to hostile versus benevolent intentions toward political adversaries. “…The majority of studies ( n = 35 cross-sectional, 1 longitudinal, 12 experimental) focused on significance loss, which was operationalized as a threat of significance loss or actual significance loss. The threat of significance loss was measured in two studies as: (a) negative emotional states related to the potential failure of the participants’ candidate in the U.S. presidential election (Jasko, Grzymala-Moszczynska, et al, 2020, Study 1a) and (b) socioeconomic threat (van Prooijen & Kuijper, 2020 2 ). Actual significance loss was measured in 35 studies.…”

“…Nine cross-sectional studies assessed significance gain as positive emotional states. Among these, one focused on anticipated significance gain concerning the potential victory of the participants’ candidate in the U.S. presidential election (Jasko, Grzymala-Moszczynska, et al, 2020, Study 1b). The remaining eight studies focused on actual significance gain following: (a) the election of Trump among Trump voters (Jasko, Grzymala-Moszczynska, et al, 2020, Studies 2–3) or (b) participation in activism (Jasko et al, 2019, Studies 1–6).…”

“…In negative polarization, voters side with a given candidate primarily from a distaste for the candidate's opponent [47,48]. In a study of both Trump and Hillary Clinton supporters, K. Jasko et al [49] found that one's individual sense of personal significance predicts hostility to the preferred candidate's opponents.…”
