“…No studies reported specifics of vital sign changes, but all noted absence of clinical signs of toxicity. The single large included retrospective study reported complications that were surgery (ie, surgical sites infection and wound dehiscence) rather than anesthesia‐related 61 . The mortality rate in this study was attributed to patients’ surgical conditions and comorbidities rather than to the use of local anesthetic; patients receiving local anesthetic actually had lower mortality rate (10.6% vs 11.4%) than another group in the study treated with general anesthesia.…”

“…In alphabetical order by author, Table 2 summarizes individual study characteristics for all those included in this review. Most studies pertained to neuraxial procedures 31,32,34‐38,40,44‐58 performed by anesthesiologists, while the majority of peripheral administrations 30,33,39,59‐62 were performed by surgeons. Each of these approaches included instances of single‐dose local anesthesia and catheter placement for continuous infusion.…”

“…Hagander et al [7] already demonstrated that even major abdominal surgery can be relatively safely performed under local anaesthesia in premature infants and represents an established option, especially in developing countries where general anaesthesia remains accompanied by significant mortality.…”

“…[5,14] Globally, approximately 1.6% of neonates have congenital malformations that can be lethal or disabling if not diagnosed promptly and treated appropriately. [11,[16][17][18] In Cuba, the most common birth defects contributing to infant mortality are congenital cardiopathies, followed by digestive system anomalies, diaphragmatic hernias, chromosomal disorders, and malformations of the central nervous system. [19] About half of the malformations are in the cardiovascular apparatus and of these, about 25% are severe.…”
