“…In a recent study performed with combinations of Rhizobium strains and genotypes from white clover cultivars, Moeskjaer et al (2021) reported low to moderate broad-sense heritabilities, on an individual plant phenotype level, ranging from 0.23 to 0.32 for a set of symbiotic traits including: growth per day; growth during a specific window post-inoculation; and corrections of these for initial plant size. When using a genomic relationship matrix to derive based on clover genotype means, the values for these traits ranged from 0.24 to 0.27, when corrected for initial plant size ( Moeskjaer et al, 2021 ). This aligns with the symbiotic yield values described in the current study.…”

“…This aligns with the symbiotic yield values described in the current study. The trial reported by Moeskjaer et al (2021) assessed stolon cuttings, which represent the mature clover nodal-rooting growth stage, from a range of genetic material. By contrast, the current study focussed on seedlings from a half-sib family structure growing on their initial taproot.…”

“…Plants were initially grown in the greenhouse as part of a larger greenhouse trial investigating the effects of clover and rhizobium genetic variation through monitoring of plant growth traits (Moeskjaer et al, 2022). Mother plants of 20 commercial varieties with known genotypes were initially grown and cuttings were taken.…”

“…overall plant size, leaf markings, plant density, leaf colour, internode length and stolon density (Moeskjaer et al, 2022). The crosses used in the field trial were not used in the greenhouse trial due to the intellectual property rights of DLF Trifolium breeder trial.…”
