Major Depressive Disorder and Bone Mass in Adolescents and Young Adults

Abstract: Depression has been associated with reduced bone mass in adults, but the mechanisms remain unclear. In addition, little is known about the association between depression and bone health during growth and development. To address this knowledge gap, we examined bone density and structure in 222 adolescents and young adults (69% females, mean±SD age: 19.0±1.5 years), enrolled within one month of starting a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) or unmedicated. Psychiatric functioning was assessed with self… Show more

“…Following the same protocol described previously, 18, 20 peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) scans were obtained at the 4% site of the nondominant radius (rich in trabecular bone), to estimate volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD), and at the 20% site to estimate cortical vBMD. A Stratec XCT-2000 scanner, software version 6.0 (Stratec, Inc., Pforzheim, Germany), was used.…”

“…Participants, 15 to 20 years old, who were within one month of starting a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) (n=88), or who were taking no psychotropic medication (n=92), were enrolled from outpatient and inpatient clinical settings, as well as by e-mail solicitation and word of mouth, into a longitudinal observational study designed to examine the effects of SSRIs on bone mass 37 . Of those taking SSRIs, 25 (28.4%) were taking fluoxetine, 25 (28.4%) sertraline, 6 (6.8%) escitalopram and 2 (2.3%) paroxetine.…”
