Major Contaminants in Industrial and Domestic Wastewater

Abstract: Abstract. This paper provides an overview on the type and concentration of the major contaminants in industrial and domestic wastewater. The present study was conducted to analyze and collect data on hazardous substances in wastewater from petrochemical plants, pulp and paper mills, electroplating industries, power plants, and municipal sources (households and small industries).

“…Wastewater treatment processes can be classified into biological, chemical, physical, and physicochemical approaches. , Physicochemical processes play an essential role in effectively treating wastewater while allowing polluting materials recovery. This approach represents a potent strategy for managing industrial and domestic waste, while at the same time enabling resource recovery. “…In addition, Boumidoune village, located in the downstream of the quarry may contribute to water pollution through the discharge of wastewater from non‐connected dwellings. Globally the most common heavy metal contaminants that enter domestic wastewater include Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn (Vysokomornaya et al., 2015). Previous studies conducted in the Nile River watershed between 2011 and 2013 revealed an average lead value ranging from 275.71 to 404.13 μg/L, and a cadmium ranging from 12.41 to 33 μg/L in several groundwater samples collected downstream (Belli & Leghouchi, 2018).…”
