Maintenance support needs for object-oriented software

Abstract: The object-oriented (00) programming paradigm for developing sofware systems has become more mainstream in the past several years. Existing research into the use of the 00 paradigm is heavily biased toward front-end problems: design, programming languages, and development environments. Lost in this has been support for maintenance of 00 systems, yet maintenance is 80% of the effort for successful sofware systems. This paper focuses on software tools that support and enhance the software maintenance effort for … Show more

“…Finally, the scope for tool support in assisting with inspection of object-oriented code has been demonstrated. An automated version of display method due to Parnas et al may be one possibility, whilst another may be in the use of tools used to support maintenance, such as the Valhalla system (Wilde et al, 1993) or the maintenance suite described by Crocker and Mayrhauser ( 1993). Finally, visualization tools may be of some help, such as the static Seesoft system (Eick et al, 1992) or the dynamic visualization system described by De Pauw et al (1993).…”

“…Another example of such support for maintenance has been described by Crocker and Mayrhauser (1993). They describe a suite containing four types of tool.…”

“…In his paper, he defined a set of different refractorings (program restructurings) for 00 programs, and proposed a systematic solution to deal with refractorings in an inheritance hierarchy (both generalization and specialization) and a class aggregation structure. Crocker and Mayrhauser (1993) discussed the needs and the necessary software tools that support and enhance the software maintenance effort for 00 programs. These include:…”
