Finding optimal maintenance policies for complex multi-component systems is a realworld challenge in the industry. This paper compares three maintenance policies for complex systems with non-identical components and economic dependencies in case of fault. Discrete event and Monte Carlo simulation are used to replicate fault occurrences, while a genetic algorithm is used to minimize the cost of maintenance by finding optimal groups of maintenance activities. Low total average maintenance cost and high average availability of the system are considered as desirable objectives and the capacity of the studied policies to achieve these goals is analyzed. None of the policies dominates the others (in a Pareto efficiency sense), thus making the policy choice context dependent and subject to decision makers' preferences.

Dependent failures impose severe consequences on a complex system’s reliability and overall performance, and a realistic assessment, therefore, requires an adequate consideration of these failures. System survival signature opens up a new and efficient way to compute a system’s reliability, given its ability to segregate the structural from the probabilistic attributes of the system. Consequently, it outperforms the well-known system reliability evaluation techniques, when solicited for problems like maintenance optimisation, requiring repetitive system evaluations. The survival signature, however, is premised on the statistical independence between component failure times and, more generally, on the theory of weak exchangeability, for dependent component failures. The assumption of independence is flawed for most realistic engineering systems while the latter entails the painstaking and sometimes impossible task of deriving the joint survival function of the system components. This article, therefore, proposes a novel, generally applicable, and efficient Monte Carlo Simulation approach that allows the survival signature to be intuitively used for the reliability evaluation of systems susceptible to induced failures. Multiple component failure modes, as well, are considered, and sensitivities are analysed to identify the most critical common-cause group to the survivability of the system. Examples demonstrate the superiority of the approach.

This paper models age replacement and block replacement when there is the possibility of defaulting on the planned maintenance. A default occurs when a planned preventive replacement is not executed, and we discuss how defaults can arise in practice. Our aim is to study the robustness of block replacement and age replacement, bearing in mind that (a) these policies are frequently used in practice, (b) in the standard scenario (no defaulting) age replacement has a lower economic cost rate than block-replacement and (c) block replacement is simple to manage because component age does not have to be monitored. We model defaults as independent Bernoulli trials. We prove that a cost-minimizing critical age for replacement in the age policy with defaulting exists if the time to failure distribution has an increasing failure rate. A numerical study of the policies indicates that: age replacement is effective if maintenance control is good, that is, when there is only a small chance of defaulting; block replacement is relatively robust to defaulting (postponement), but less so to lack of knowledge about component reliability.
