Maintenance or regression of the corpus luteum during multiple decisive periods of bovinepregnancy

Abstract: In ruminants, there are specific times during the estrous cycle or pregnancy when the corpus luteum (CL) may undergo regression. This review has attempted to summarize the physiological and cellular mechanisms involved in CL regression or maintenance during four distinct periods. The first period is near day 7 when animals that are ovulating after a period of low circulating progesterone (P4), such as first pubertal ovulation or first postpartum ovulation, are at risk of having a premature increase in Prostagl… Show more

“…The drop observed in circulating P4 from 21 d BEC to d 2 d BC and 0 d PP is consistent with previous reports (Goff et al, 2002). The drop in levels reflects luteolysis, which begins 3 d before calving (Wiltbank et al, 2016). Results regarding whether P4 exhibits circadian rhythms during pregnancy are mixed (Bates and Herzog, 2020).…”

“…Corpus luteum luteal regression mechanism by PGF2α is currently described by abolishing steroid production of LH through blocking the luteal cell's receptor and interruption of multiple LH receptors intracellular mediators [7]. Even though PGF2α luteolytic mechanism is still unknown, Superoxide Dismutase is likely to involve in CL degradation induced by PGF2α in cow [8] During much of pregnancy, the mechanisms that cause PGF secretion from the uterus in response to oxytocin are intact but luteolysis does not normally occur, perhaps due to lack of efficient utero-ovarian transfer of PGF [9].…”

“…It is well-established that production of IFNT by the elongating embryo maintains the CL during the classical maternal recognition of pregnancy period in the first month of pregnancy ( Bazer et al, 1997 ; Spencer et al , 2007 ; Wiltbank et al , 2016a ). During the second month of pregnancy and beyond, the CL is maintained by mechanisms that remain to be elucidated ( Wiltbank et al, 2016b ).…”

“…In cattle, if pregnancy does not occur, regression of the CL is initiated between day 16 and 25 after ovulation due to secretion of pulses of PGF from the uterus in response to circulating oxytocin pulses ( Ginther et al , 2012 ; Spencer and Hansen, 2015 ; Wiltbank et al , 2016b ). In pregnant cattle, during this same time period (i.e.…”
