Condition-based maintenance (CBM) has received increasing attention in the literature over the past years. The application of CBM in practice, however, is lagging behind. This is, at least in part, explained by the complexity of real-life systems as opposed to the stylized ones studied most often. To overcome this issue, research is focusing more and more on complex systems, with multiple components subject to various dependencies. Existing classifications of these dependencies in the literature are no longer sufficient. Therefore, we provide an extended classification scheme. Besides the types of dependencies identified in the past (economic, structural, and stochastic), we add resource dependence, where multiple components are connected through, e.g., shared spares, tools, or maintenance workers. Furthermore, we extend the existing notion of structural dependence by distinguishing between structural dependence from a technical point of view and structural dependence from a performance point of view (e.g., through a series or parallel setting). We review the advances made with respect to CBM. Our main focus is on the implications of dependencies on the structure of the optimal CBM policy. We link our review to practice by providing real-life examples, thereby stressing current gaps in the literature.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to propose a condition-based opportunistic maintenance policy considering economic dependence for a series–parallel hybrid system with a K-out-of-N redundant structure, where a single component in series is denoted as subsystem1, and K-out-of-N redundant structure is denoted as subsystem2.Design/methodology/approachBased on the theory of Residual Useful Life (RUL), inspection points are determined, and then different maintenance actions are adopted in the purpose of minimizing the cost rate. Both perfect and imperfect maintenance actions are carried out for subsystem1. More significantly, regarding economic dependence, condition-based opportunistic maintenance is designed for the series–parallel hybrid system: preemptive maintenance for subsystem1, and both preemptive and postponed maintenance for subsystem2.FindingsThe sensitivity analysis indicates that the proposed policy outperforms two classical maintenance policies, incurring the lowest total cost rate under the context of both heterogeneous and quasi-homogeneous K-out-of-N subsystems.Practical implicationsThis model can be applied in series–parallel systems with redundant structures that are widely used in power transmission systems in electric power plants, manufacturing systems in textile factories and sewerage systems. Considering inconvenience and high cost incurred in the inspection of hybrid systems, this model helps production managers better maintain these systems.Originality/valueIn maintenance literature, much attention has been received in repairing strategies on hybrid systems with economic dependence considering preemptive maintenance. Limited work has considered postponed maintenance. However, this paper uses both condition-based preemptive and postponed maintenance on the issue of economic dependence bringing opportunities for grouping maintenance activities for a series–parallel hybrid system.

This paper studies condition-based and opportunistic maintenance for a two-unit deteriorating system in series. The system's condition is observed at equidistant time intervals. We suppose each unit may have random failures and fail only once within an inspection interval. The random failure probability of each unit is exponential and the failure rate is dependent on the condition. When one unit fails, corrective maintenance action is performed and another unit's condition will be inspected. If the condition of the inspected unit reaches a preventive maintenance threshold, opportunistic maintenance (OM) action will be performed simultaneously. Considering discounted optimality criteria, we construct an infinite horizon cost model via dynamic programming. Based on the model, a condition-based and opportunistic maintenance policy is determined through minimizing discount total maintenance cost using value iteration algorithm. A numerical example is provided to illustrate how the policy proceeds and cost-savings are analyzed to validate the superiority of this maintenance policy. An approximate policy is proposed and its integrity relative to optimal policy is analyzed through simulation. Finally Sensitive analysis is discussed by using the approach of two-level factorial analysis.
