Maintenance of healthy skin: cleansing, moisturization, and ultraviolet protection

Abstract: Summary Background  The human skin is exposed to an extraordinary hostile environment over the course of a lifetime. Whereas there are multiple product types that consumers may select to help preserve and protect the skin, at a minimum cleansing, moisturization, and protection against solar ultraviolet radiation are elements of any strategy designed for skin health. To achieve the greatest benefit from these treatment modalities, products must be carefully formulated, chosen, and used, since poorly designed or… Show more

“…However, the concept of skin health maintenance is bigger than anti-aging, not restricted only to the prevention of ageing and/or the skin care of aged skin but it takes into concern different skin types, conditions and needs of skin with the aim to keep it healthy. The basic elements of any strategy for skin health are cleansing, moisturization and protection from UV light [137]. Finally, based on all the presented data, additional compulsory element for any of these products should be a proper pH value.…”

“…The pH of the clayey soils used for cleansing can also influence their cleansing activity. According to Baranda et al (2002), Korting et al (1991Korting et al ( , 1992, Schmid and Korting (1995), Gfatter et al (1997), Ananthapadmanabhan et al (2004) and Nash et al (2007), suitable skin cleansers must have pH similar to that of the skin or near neutral. Considering that the pH of healthy skin ranges between 4.5 to 5.5 (Korting et al, 1992;Gfatter et al, 1997) samples B1, H2 and H5 which recorded acidic and near neutral pH can be considered suitable for cleansing application as little chemical reaction is expected to occur when they are applied on the skin.…”

“…However, H8, H13 and H14 which recorded pH values > 9 can pose problems to the skin when used as cleansers. This is because highly alkaline cosmetic cleansers have high skin irritation potential (Nash et al, 2007) and can cause damage to the lipid bilayer of the skin's stratum corneum, leading to dryness of the skin, itching and after wash tightness (Ananthapadmanabhan et al, 2003). Frequent application of alkaline clayey soils for cleansing purposes is thus discouraged and moisturisation of the skin after the cleanser is washed off is advised.…”

“…This cleanser is best suited for dry and sensitive skin since it would not leave skin feeling rough and tight after cleansing [42]. The double cleansing strategy will help ensure that any breakout inducing irritants, debris, and makeup on your facial skin is completely washed away [43,44]. Moreover, a double cleanser is a smart cleaning strategy, but it is warned that using the same cleaner for both stages 1 and 2 is unsuitable [44].…”
