Maintenance of genetic diversity in Cordia africana Lam., a declining forest tree species in Ethiopia

Abstract: We assessed genetic variation in a total of 22 populations of the tree species Cordia africana Lam. in Ethiopia and analyzed the country-wide impact of population history, forest disturbance and alteration of land use on extant intraspecific diversity. Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphisms (AFLPs) and chloroplast microsatellite markers were investigated. The analyses of the AFLP data revealed high diversity in all investigated populations: the percentage of polymorphic loci (PPL) ranged from 62.2% to 92.2% a… Show more

“…C. abyssinica, C. africana, C. alliodora are species that have wood utilized in production of high-quality furniture and other objects and domestic utensils. It is highly valued commercially in Ethiopia, and it is also a native species of Saudi Arabia and tropical Africa (Derero et al, 2011).…”

“…Gmel., Cordia africana Lam., Lobelia giberroa Hemsl., and Coffea arabica L. have been reported by Ayele et al (2009), Derero et al (2010), Kebede et al (2007) and Aga et al (2005), respectively. The authors suggest both human and non-human impacts on genetic variation patterns and propose possible conservation strategies.…”

“…The other negligible challenges of seedlings plantation in this work was those seedlings that died or at risk while transportation for plantation. The aforementioned constraints are similar to those facing the forest development in Ethiopia as noted by Derero et al (2011) which include: transportation of seedlings, poor seedling quality and inappropriate silviculture, poor research extension linkage and poor coordination in the sector.…”
