Maintaining reflexivity in qualitative nursing research

Abstract: Reflexivity is the process of reflecting critically on oneself as a researcher (Bradbury-Jones, 2007) and is central to the construction of knowledge in qualitative research (Narayanasamy, 2015).It requires the process of knowledge construction to be the subject of investigation (Flick, 2013). Reflexivity assists researchers to consider their "continuing engagement with participants and revelations of the self as the researcher enters the various stages of the research process" (Narayanasamy, 2015, p. 238). “…In other words, in qualitative research this would be referred to as reflexivity. 30,31 Similarly, continuing with the patterns of knowing in nursing from a critical, feminist paradigm such as that of our research, it is important to mention the pattern proposed by Peggy Chinn and Maeona Kramer, emancipatory knowing. 32 This is characterized by the recognition of situations of social injustice, with praxis (reflection for action) as its fundamental form of expression.…”

“…It is designed to improve reasoning, learning, and problem solving from the practice of deep reflection on and questioning of the lived experience, similar to techniques gained in health professions' diagnostic and clinical training (Mamede & Schmidt, 2023). This method is a reflexivity strategy for constructing knowledge in qualitative research (Peddle, 2022) that focuses on critical self-reflection of oneself and the research process (Narayanasamy, 2015) and increases the rigor of qualitative research (Bradbury-Jones, 2007).…”
