Mainstreaming genomics: training experience of hospital medical officers at the Royal Melbourne Hospital

Abstract: The rapid evolution and wide applicability of genomic testing means that medical practitioners outside the field are not appropriately skilled to understand the utility of genomics for their patients. Rotating junior doctors through genomic medicine provides them with the hands‐on experience necessary to understand the complexities in this field. In this study, we analysed the training experience of 12 hospital medical officers who rotated through genomic medicine at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Here, we demo… Show more

“…Research into workplace learning in developing genetics/genomics knowledge and skills has begun to appear in recent literature. Structured training programs for medical trainees to learn about clinical genetics/genomics in authentic practice settings have been implemented in graduate medical programs in the United States (Forsyth et al, 2020;Geng et al, 2019;Nguyen et al, 2016) and Australia (Huq et al, 2021), with participants self-reporting positive impacts on their genetics/ genomics knowledge and skills. A mixed-methods longitudinal evaluation of a didactic-active learning genomic medical education program in Israel reported significant improvements in participants' genomics knowledge (Michaelson-Cohen et al, 2020).…”
