This paper analyses the construction of Norwegian couples' sexuality through the study of a publically financed and organised relationship course called Living Well Together (Godt Samliv). Established in 2005, this relationship course aimed at first-time parent couples is offered free of charge by municipal health centres. Scrutiny of national policy documents and political debate and of the course handbooks presented to couples, makes visible a particular Norwegian discourse on sexuality, which stresses gender equality and neutrality and ideas of inclusive democratization. New parents are advised to make active efforts to maintain a loving, lasting relationship and sexuality, for the sake of the children. The idea of sex implied by this couples relationship policy is based on what might be described as a 'duty of spontaneity', presented as a work both parents should undertake in order to achieve a stable and healthy relationship. We argue, however, that the inclusive rhetoric of diversity that characterises this public form of Norwegian sexuality has its limitations and that certain forms of intimacy and sexuality are excluded from this discourse.

A strong emphasis on individual choice is considered to represent a particular neoliberal culture, and choice is claimed to substitute feminism. This article argues that the vocabulary of choice should not be seen only as a representation of a double entanglement of neoliberalism and postfeminism, but rather as a site for entanglement, and further explored as a performative concept. The argument is developed though empirical analysis of media texts on women combining career and motherhood. The metaphor of work–life balance is argued to function as a gendering frame as the particular combination of motherhood and career commitment is construed as conflicting dimensions of a feminine subjectivity. Within the gendered work–life balance framing the vocabulary of choice is performative, producing dichotomies and differences by the looks of individual agency. Thus, choice is not merely ‘covering up power structures’: the vocabulary of choice performs structuring power.

The article presents and discusses a critical textual analysis of opinions and attitudes towards various sexual phenomena articulated in the Danish print media during 2004-2006 compared with 1997. The study proves that sexual pleasures and practices such as anal sex, group sex, pornography, sexualisation and prostitution have given rise to increasing moral anxieties and fears, condemnatory attitudes and moralistic standpoints during the last few years. These moralistic and normative standpoints on sexual morality put forward clear specifications as to how people should live their lives and what sexual and bodily pleasures and practices they should be allowed to enjoy. Drawing inspiration from the writings of French philosopher Michel Foucault on ‘ethics’ and ‘aesthetics of existence’, the article suggests an ethical approach and sensibility when dealing morally with people’s sexual and bodily pleasures and practices as well as when doing research on sexual phenomena such as anal sex, pornography and commercial sex.
