“…Combining this with the revised relation between mB and Ms, i.e., mB=0.65Ms +2.5 (ABE and KANAMORI, 1980;ABE, 1981), we obtain Ms=(logM0-15.6)/1.56. logM0 indicating that the apparent stress is, on the average, nearly constant.…”

“…For shallow events, the surface-wave magnitude Ms has been habitually used as a standard scale. In order to maintain the consistency as much as possible, here we examine the relation for shallow events on the basis of the mB scale; because the magnitude versus energy relation was originally introduced on the basis of the mB scale (GUTENBERG and RICHTER, 1956), and the mB versus Ms relation is debatable (ABE and KANAMORI, 1980;ABE, 1981). Using the same method as that employed before, we assigned mB to the data set given by KANAMORI and ANDERSON (1975).…”

“…The magnitude of many large earthquakes used in the calculations of Davies and Brune [ 1971] had been overestimated [Geller and Kanamori, 1977;Geller et al, 1978;Abe and Kanamori, 1980;Kanamori and Abe, 1979;Abe, 1979], and several (18) earthquakes were missing from their catalog [Miyamura, 1976]. We have recompiled the catalog of large (Ms >-7.0) shallow (h <_ 60 km) earthquakes since 1898 [McNally and Hearn, 1981] for closer examination of the seismic slip rates and for a comparison with the plate convergence rates [Minster and Jordan, 1978].…”

“…For these large events, MR is significantly larger than m• (e.g., for m• = 7.9, MR = 8.5). Abe and Kanamori [1979].) In the present study we used m• defined by (3).…”

“…In the present study we used m• defined by (3). The method of calculation is described in detail in Abe and Kanamori [1979] and is not repeated here.…”
