“…While we acknowledge the present study is not a population‐based study, it is important to note that the overall prevalence of obesity (36.7%), arterial hypertension (23.3%), diabetes (7%) and MetS (25.6%) found in our patients with gallstones studied closely mimic to that reported in the most recent Spanish population‐based studies (28.2, 29.2, 7.8 and 22.7% respectively) . Taken these facts into account, it is conceivable that the figures of NASH prevalence found in our study population may be extrapolated to the Spanish adult population because the demographic features and major risk factors for NASH, such as obesity, diabetes and MetS, are similarly represented.…”

“…Univariate and multivariate analysis of the independent variables associated with NASH in the entire population of patients with gallstones studied (n = 215) NASH, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis; OR, odds ratio; CI, confidence interval; HOMA, homeostatic model assessment; HDL, high-density lipoprotein; ALT, alanine aminotransferase; c-GT, gamma-glutamyltransferase (32)(33)(34)…”

“…Almost a quarter of the adults in this study had a diagnosis of MS, which is in agreement with other population-based studies in Spain [3]. Our cohort exhibited a BMI that seems slightly lower than that reported for the cohorts in other studies with Spanish populations [19].…”

“…It is a highly prevalent condition, with an estimated quarter of all adults having three or more CMRFs, and its presence increases the risk to develop type 2 diabetes as well as the risk for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality [13]. Although the MS concept has been challenged, as clustering does not provide more risk than the sum of the individual risk factors, assessment of the clustering of CMRFs is still a useful tool in clinical practice to recognize patients at risk [4].…”

“…In the 3rd National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, metabolic syndrome was present in 22.8% and 22.6% of US men and women, respectively 5. Another study from 2008 to 2010 in 11 149 adults in Spain reported the prevalence of metabolic syndrome as 22.7% 6. A systematic review in Brazil revealed prevalence of metabolic syndrome in the general population to be 29.6% and as high as 65.3% in an indigenous population 7.…”
