Magnitude and associated factors of anti-retroviral therapy adherence among children attending HIV care and treatment clinics in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Abstract: Introduction The HIV pandemic continues to contribute significantly towards childhood mortality and morbidity. The up-scaling of the Anti-retroviral therapy (ART) access has seen more children surviving and sanctions great effort be made on ensuring adherence. Adherence is a dynamic process that changes over time and is determined by variable factors. This necessitates the urgency to conduct studies to determine the potential factors affecting adherence in our setting and therefore achieve the 90-90-90 goal of… Show more

“…Children often struggle to maintain sustained adherence over time, hence the need to support patients and their caregivers in developing strategies for long-term adherence to antiretroviral therapy. 22 Our study has some limitations. We did not take into account factors such as the level of initial viral suppression or the level of immunosuppression which are also factors that could be at the origin of the rebound.…”

“…ART reduces plasma viremia, increases the CD4 cell count, and ultimately improves the health of children living with HIV. Despite the benefits and availability of ART, medication adherence remains suboptimal among children living with HIV due to multiple barriers, notably reliance on caregivers and guardians to regularly administer medication [6][7][8]. In addition, ART may be associated with toxicities and adverse side effects that include anaemia [9], metabolic abnormalities [10][11][12], and reduced growth [10,11].…”
