Magnetostriction and magnetomechanical coupling of grain oriented Tb/sub 0.6/Dy/sub 0.4/ sheet

Abstract: The magnetostriction, magnetization, and Young's moduli were measured on laminated rods of thin hot rolled sheets of T b , , D y , , at 77 K. The results were compared to those obtained on single crystals. Approximately 65% of the single crystal saturation magnetostriction was achieved in the rolled samples. While the hot rolling produces the desired planar texture, the magnetostriction and magnetomechanical coupling strongly depend upon the final heat treatment.

“…As observed previously the magnetisation of pure polycrystalline Dy is well below the single crystal saturated value of 10 m B /atom. In the highest applied field of 8 T we were able to observe about 2/3 of the saturation magnetisation [16]. With 10% atomic Fe impurity the magnetisation drops below the value one would expect for the Fe coupled AFM with the Dy.…”

“…5 At 77 K magnetostrictions of 6300 ppm were reported. 4 The magnetic fields required to saturate the textured polycrystalline specimens are higher than our test apparatus can provide. Crystallographic texture should differ for the plane-and form-rolled specimens, since plane-rolled material will have better alignment of the basal planes.…”

“…Because impurities inhibit grain growth, expensive high purity material is required for single crystal growth. 4 ͑Our commercial grade material has a total purity 99.7%, whereas the high purity material has a total purity of 99.94%.͒ The Next Generation Space Telescope may require 2000-3000 cryogenic actuators. Since it is not possible to produce single crystals in such numbers, textured polycrystals are being developed for use in actuator applications.…”
