Magnetorheological semi-active mount system for engines: Prototyping and testing

Abstract: In order to maximize the controllability of magnetorheological (MR) mount for engines, a novel (MR) mount with an internal bypass (MRM-IB), which provides particular advantages of large dynamic stiffness range, small field-off dynamic stiffness and long available stroke under full vibration frequency range, is proposed and investigated in this paper. The proposed MRM-IB consists of a main rubber spring unit for supporting static load and a MR damping unit for mechanical energy dissipation. The MR damping unit … Show more

“…However, the controllability of the MR squeeze mount is limited by the squeeze gap. To maximize controllability, Liu et al [61] devised a novel mechanism for a MR mount with an internal bypass. Because the MR fluid channel consists of inner and outer concentric cylinders and the piston divides the inner cylinder, the proposed MR mount has many benefits such as a large controllable range and working stroke and small field-off dynamic stiffness.…”

“…While significant progress has been made in the study of dynamic characteristics and structures of MRF mounts, research on wide-frequency vibration isolation of such mounts remains relatively limited. Liu et al (2020) proposed an MRF mount, known as the internal bypass valve-type MRF mount, which exhibits a large dynamic stiffness range, small zero-field dynamic stiffness, and maximized working stroke across the entire operating frequency range. Chen et al (2019) investigated the phenomenological mechanical model of MRF engine mount under engine frequency variations and magnetic effects.…”

“…In this configuration the height of the flow channel is varied according to the prescribed displacement or force. Exemplary devices include small stroke dampers [18] or engine mounts [19] in which a rather large force can be achieved across a fairly small displacement span. The (d) pinch mode principle is different.…”
