Magneto-sensitive nickel nanowires fabricated by electrodeposition into multi- and single-ion track templates

Abstract: Polycarbonate templates of (30±1) µm thickness containing cylindrical etched-track nanochannels of (500±50) nm diameter were used for electrodeposition of Ni nanowires. Using 10 4 channels per cm 2 , the most favorable deposition potential of -1.0 V was determined in a potentiostatic mode by varying the deposition potential with respect to an Ag/AgCl reference electrode over a range between -0.1 V and -1.5 V. The deposition efficiency at -1.0 V was estimated around 10 %. The resulting single wires had a resist… Show more

“…By the way, in case of a thin film containing an array of nanowires with a large aspect more than ca. 100 [24][25][26][27], the array will be easily magnetized even in the perpendicular direction to the film plane due to decreasing f d . On the contrary, when the magnetic field is applied to in-plane direction to the film plane, f d will be almost zero and H eff will be equal to H a .…”

“…This phenomenon seems to be caused by the diffusion control of Cu 2+ ions. In the potential region less-noble than the equilibrium potential of Co, the cathodic current increases again at circa -0.8 V. It is also well-known that the electrodeposition of iron-group metals such as Ni, Co, and Fe is accompanied by the overpotential [22,23] due to the rate determining multi-step reduction mechanism [24]. Therefore, this increase in cathodic current is mainly caused by the deposition current of Co. As depicted in Fig.7(b), the potential dependence of growth rate for the nanowires corresponds well to the polarization curve for …”
