Magneto-optical FeGa2O4 nanoparticles as dual-modality high contrast efficacy T2 imaging and cathodoluminescent agents

Abstract: The magneto-optical FeGa(2)O(4) nanoparticles with high Fe mass magnetization exhibited a high-performance T(2)-lowering effect and displayed cathodoluminescence.

“…Some of these alloys with a composition around FeGaO 3 are piezoelectric with an additional large linear magnetoelectric effect [12]. Other oxides close to the FeGa 2 O 4 composition have been proposed for hyperthermia treatments and as the insulating paramagnetic layer in a magnetic tunnel junction [13][14][15]. There are works devoted to the properties of bulk samples [1, 2 , 3, 11-12, 16], to thin films and nanoparticles [4-7, 9, 14-15 17-18].…”

“…28 However, other studies demonstrate the random distribution of Ga 3+ between the tetrahedral and octahedral positions, which would also result in a nonlinear evolution of the cell parameters with gallium content. 40,41 Regarding the morphological analysis of the samples, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed similar morphologies (cuboctahedrons) and sizes in the 6-12 nm range, as can be seen in Fig. 2.…”

“…All the analysed samples have shown considerable high r 1 and r 2 values, which are above the relaxivities observed for commercial contrast agents (commercial AMI-227, SHU-555C (r 1 = 2.9 mM −1 s −1 , r 2 = 69 mM −1 s −1 ) or for gallium ferrite nanoparticles or other synthesized magnetite nanoparticles of similar sizes. 22 Contrast agents are usually classified according to their relationship of relaxation; therefore, if materials show a high r 2 /r 1 ratio they are classified as T 2 contrast agents, enhancing the dark contrast and when the r 1 values are high and the r 2 /r 1 ratio is close to 1, T 1 contrast agents are obtained. 65 In our case, different relaxation values were obtained depending on the gallium content.…”
