Magnetization steps in[Fe(salen)Cl]2

Abstract: The differential susceptibility dM /dH of ͓Fe͑salen͒Cl͔ 2 where salen is N,NЈ-ethylenebis͑salicylideneiminato͒, was measured in pulsed magnetic fields up to 550 kOe. The samples were in a capsule that was immersed in a liquid-helium bath maintained at a temperature 1.5рT bath р4.2 K. Three magnetization steps ͑MST's͒ arising from energy-level crossings for the Fe 3ϩ dimer were observed as peaks in dM /dH. The intradimer exchange constant obtained from the MST's is JϭϪ8.4Ϯ0.2 cm Ϫ1 , assuming a g factor of 2.00… Show more

“…This system exhibits a change of the slope in the normal incidence M(μ 0 H ) curves at around 1.2 T. This feature hints to a switch of the magnetic state from low to high J z triggered by the Zeeman energy. Such field-induced crossovers of magnetic states have been reported in molecular magnets [61,62] and Fe atoms on Pt(111) [63]. This peculiar shape of the magnetization curves, as well as the XAS spectra acquired at different fields, allow us to determine the magnetic level splitting with very high accuracy.…”

“…The cross-over field roughly coincides with the maximum in the dM/dH curve, ca 30 kOe. The further increase in the derivative above 90 kOe indicates that another spin state with S> 1 starts to be populated as an effect of the applied magnetic field [6,17,18].…”

“…In the literature, this phenomenon has been pointed out to explain humps in the magnetization process of Fe 2 in the pulse magnetic eld. 23) In this way the present mechanism is quite general although its quantitative properties depends on the details of situation.…”
