Magnetism of isolatedMn12single-molecule magnets detected by magnetic circular dichroism: Observation of spin tunneling with a magneto-optical technique

Abstract: We report magnetic and magneto-optical measurements of two Mn 12 single-molecule magnet derivatives isolated in organic glasses. Field-dependent magnetic circular dichroism ͑MCD͒ intensity curves ͑hysteresis cycles͒ are found to be essentially identical to superconducting quantum interference device magnetization results and provide experimental evidence for the potential of the optical technique for magnetic characterization. Optical observation of magnetic tunneling has been achieved by studying the decay of… Show more

“…[10][11][12][13] An advantage that MCD spectroscopy offers, when compared to standard magnetometric measurements, is high sensitivity; this allows measurements of the magnetization of a collection of isolated molecules in dilute frozen solutions with diamagnetic solvents, thus minimizing the effect of intermolecular magnetic interactions and facilitating measurements at the singlemolecule level.…”

“…The difference of materials between containing and not containing azobenzene may be more significant than that of cis-trans isomerization of azobenzene. As studied previously, bulk precipitates of Mn 12 -acetate exhibit blocking temperature between 5 K (superparamagnetism) and 3 K (single-molecule magnet behavior) [26][27][28], these samples exhibit clear magnetic hysteresis below blocking temperature. The features prove the integrity of the Mn 12 -acetate molecules even in a polymer matrix.…”

“…The magnetization decay is exponential at longer delay times, but faster at short delay times. 41 The fast shorttime-delay magnetization relaxation, which persists in dilute solution, 42 was attributed to hyperfine and/or dipolarinteraction-induced tunneling, which leads to the magnetization decaying with the square root of time. 41,43,44 Here we present a detailed and comprehensive study of the magnetization relaxation in Mn 12 Ac single-crystal mosaics.…”
