Magnetically tunable terahertz magnetoplasmons in ferrofluid-filled photonic crystals

Abstract: We investigated terahertz (THz) magneto-optical properties of a ferrofluid and a ferrofluid-filled photonic crystal (FFPC) by using the THz time-domain spectroscopy. A magnetoplasmon resonance splitting and an induced THz transparency phenomenon were demonstrated in the FFPC. The further investigation reveals that the induced transparency originates from the interference between magnetoplasmon modes in the hybrid magneto-optical system of FFPC, and the THz modulation with a 40% intensity modulation depth can b… Show more

“…Four refractive index matching (RIM) liquids with different refractive indexes were fully filled in the space of Si column intervals. The RIM liquid used in our experiment is a kind of nanofluid composed of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles dispersed in the light mineral oil carrier [20], [21], and we have made up of four different nanoparticle concentrations of 3.9%, 7.9%, 11.8% and 17.7%, respectively. Before our investigation for the PCs, we measured the refractive index and absorption coefficient of these four RIM liquids by the THz TDS system as shown in Fig.…”

“…The magneto-optical (MO) material is introduced into the artificial EM micro structure such as magnetic photonic crystal or magnetoplasmonics 12,13 , has become a research hotspot in recent years 14 . Through the reasonable design of device structure, MO effect can be significantly enhanced by plasmonic resonance or bandgap effect 15,16 ; conversely, magneto-optical effect will lead to the splitting of plasmonic resonance, nonreciprocal transmission, giant Faraday rotation effect and other new physical mechanism and phenomena [17][18][19] .…”
