Magnetically Shielded Solenoid with Field of High Homogeneity

Abstract: The theory, design, and construction of a magnetically shielded solenoid are described. Three correction coils are employed in addition to the main solenoid winding. The solenoid is enclosed in three concentric magnetic shields which serve to screen the inner region of the solenoid from external magnetic fields. First the theory and design of a solenoid with correction coils and no magnetic shielding are discussed. Then calculations of the magnetic field due to a solenoid inside a closed cylinder of infinite p… Show more

“…Assuming that a given susceptibility is linear, we have the simple expression for the resultant magnetic field BЈ BЈ ϭ B 0 ͑1 ϩ ͒, [11] where B 0 is the main applied field. When is nonuniform in a sample (BЈ ϭ BЈ(r)), spins will precess at a frequency ␥(BЈ(r) ϩ G ⅐ r) in the presence of an imaging gradient G. Thus the usual mapping of spin frequencies (with gradients on) to real space is no longer an accurate representation of the spatial distribution of spins, and will result in imaging distortions.…”
