Magnetic, thermal and spectral characterization of 2,4-dimethoxybenzoates of Mn(II), Co(II) and Cu(II)

Abstract: 2,4 -Dimethoxybenzoates of Mn(II), Co(II) and Cu(II) have been synthesized as hydrated or anyhydrous polycrystalline solids and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, magnetic studies and X-ray diffraction measurements. They possess the following colours: Mn(II) -white, Co(II) -pink and Cu(II) -blue. The carboxylate groups bind as monodentate, or a symmetrical bidentate bridging ligands and tridentate. The thermal stabilities were determined in air at 293-1173K. When heated the hydrated complexe… Show more

“…Three bands were also observed for Co(Ampp-Ph) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ∙2H 2 O in the visible region of its electronic spectrum at 390, 536, and 600 nm assigned to ( 4 T 2g → 4 T 1g ), ( 4 A 2g → 4 T 1g ) and ( 4 T 1g (p)→ 4 T 1g ) transitions, respectively. The measured magnetic moment for all four Co(II) complexes were between 4.45 and 4.48 BM, which were in agreement with the expected values for an octahedral d 7 Co(II) complex [ 40 ].…”

“…It similarly has a magnetic moment value of 4.46 BM, expected for an octahedral Co(II). Three bands were observed in the electronic spectra of 1b with magnetic moment of 4.43 BM, at 408 nm, 632 nm, and 699 nm assigned as ( 4 T 2g → 4 T 1g ), ( 4 A 2g → 4 T 1g ), and ( 4 T 1g(p) → 4 T 1g ) transitions, respectively, peculiar to a d 7 octahedral geometry [ 38 ] ( Figure 7 ).…”

“…Two bands in the electronic spectra of 2d , observed as a strong band at 442 nm and a broad band that peaks at 751 nm, were assigned to 2 B 1g → 2 E g and 2 B 1g → 2 B 2g transitions, respectively ( Figure 8 ), with a magnetic moment value of 1.93 BM. 1d exhibited one single broad band characterized by a distorted octahedral Cu(II) at 618 nm which is assigned to 2 B 1g → 2 B 2g transition, with a magnetic moment value of 1.90 BM [ 38 ].…”

“…4 A 1 (P) transition of tetrahedral geometry. 34 The diffused reflectance spectrum showed band at 28,985 cm À1 which is assigned as n-π* transition and the bands at 30,303 and 37,037 cm À1 are assigned as π-π* transitions. However, both Zn (II) and Cd (II) complexes are diamagnetic, and tetrahedral geometry was suggested for them based on their empirical formula.…”
