Magnetic susceptibility and grain size distribution as prospective tools for selective exploration and provenance study of iron sand deposits: A case study from Aceh, Indonesia

Abstract: Almost all of the iron sand found in Indonesia, from Sumatra to Papua, is sandy deposit. Despite its variety of minerals, iron sand is commonly mined for low economic uses such as building material. As iron sands from different localities might have different characteristics (grain-size distribution, mineralogy, magnetic properties), such characteristics might in turn be used for provenance study or for selective mining. This study aims to examine iron sand deposits from two geographically close but geological… Show more

“…Another category of coastal sand mining for metals is of iron sands—which have heavy concentration of iron ores. Iron sands have diverse industrial applications some of which are in steel manufacturing, absorbents for removing heavy metals such as arsenic from water, in the pigment industry, as magnetic sensors, and magnetic fluids (Satria et al., 2021).…”

“…Indonesia's Iron sand abundancy is deposited in several areas such as Sumatra, South of Jawa, Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua that possibly produced from volcanic eruption and erosion of older rock [1]. In 2020, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Indonesia reported the amount of Iron sand resources in Indonesia is 2.9 Billion tons and supply 1.7% of world Iron sand that the iron content was less than 12% [2].…”

“…Iron sand can generally be synthesized as an additive to cement and steel. In nanotechnology, iron sand is widely used as a catalyst, energy storage, magnetic data storage, ferrofluid, absorbent (Khan et al, 2021), and medical diagnosis (Satria et al, 2021).…”
