Respect for Seleukid Suzerainty: The Imitative Victory Coinage of the Sistan Ariaspi

The victory coinage bearing the name Antiochos (SC 226-228), currently attributed to the province of Drangiana during the co-regency of Seleukos and Antiochos, exhibits a progressive deterioration of iconography and epigraphy over the duration of its emission. It has the characteristics of an imitative coinage, struck over a prolonged period, rather than the 14 years of the co-regency. Die study reveals stages of iconographic deterioration, enabling the coinage to be categorized into three groups, each with its own progressively degraded iconography and epigraphy. During its emission a local artistic tradition, possibly reflecting a longstanding Indian influence appears in the iconography of the obverse, and what appears to be an early Brahmi script eventually displaces Greek on the reverse. This is interpreted to reflect contemporary Mauryan cultural and linguistic influences, the result of interaction with adjacent Arachosia. Plausibly, the coinage was struck intermittently in the period c. 281-175 BC by the Ariaspi, the semi-autonomous people of the Sistan depression in Drangiana, who acknowledged Seleukid suzerainty in the choice of coin type and legend.

Sistan is a region of eastern Iran bounded to the north by Khurasan and to the south by Baluchistan. Its eastern frontier borders Afghanistan. The origin of the name “Sakastan” reflects the occupation of this land by Indo‐European Scythian populations, the Saka, from the end of the first millennium bce . A border zone, where living conditions were difficult, Sistan recovered its earlier importance under the Saffarids, moving from being a peripheral and “unimportant” region to one which was the center of a vast emirate that competed with the Abbasids and Tahirids. The Tarikh‐e Sistan is the main historical source for this region, presenting its history from a local perspective.

The stone monuments of Pasargadae (c.550 to 330 bce), Iran, represent a unique example of an advanced construction system that used stones as building materials. This study characterizes the mineralogical and chemical composition of these stones and determines their provenance. Five samples were obtained from buildings at Pasargadae and studied using optical microscopy (OM), X‐ray powder diffraction (QXRD), inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry (ICP‐MS) and X‐ray fluorescence (XRF). Their chemical and mineralogical composition was determined using the Sr/Fe ratio and the amount of Ce, Dy, Er, Eu, Gd, La, Nd, Pr, Sm, Tb, Tm, Yb and Lu in order to investigate the provenance of the building materials. Seven additional samples were obtained from rock outcrops suspected of being the source of the rock and studied using the same techniques. A statistical principal component analysis (PCA) exhibited correlations between each data set. The data suggest that Abolverdi quarry west of Pasargadae served as the source for the light limestone used in the construction of the buildings, particularly the Tomb of Cyrus the Great. The Ahmad‐Beigi and Sarpaniran outcrops to the north‐east and south‐east are suggested as the sources of the dark limestone. The Sr/Fe ratio and the amount of rare‐earth elements distinguish the samples by means of different geneses.
