Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Children under Anesthesia: The Relationship between the Degree of Information Provided to Parents and Parents’ Anxiety Scores

Abstract: Background. We aimed to investigate the correlation between the anxiety scores of parents whose children are administered anesthesia for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and the level of information provided to them before the MRI. The study included 146 children and their parents. The demographic information of the children and their parents was recorded. The parents were divided into two groups. In Group I, the patient's medical history and physical exam findings were recorded on a standard consultation form… Show more

“…Daha önce yapılan bazı çalışmalarda anksiyeteyi değerlendirmek için kan basıncı, nabız gibi fizyolojik parametreler ve epinefrin, norepinefrin, kortizol gibi nöroendokrinolojik parametreler kullanılmıştır. 32 Bu çalışmada ise ebeveyn anksiyetesini değerlendirmek için sadece VAS skalası kullanılmıştır. Veriler sadece tek bir hastanedeki ebeveynlerden toplanmıştır.…”

“…16 This is in contrast with reported levels of anxiety in non-acute setting. [17][18][19][20] These include parents of a child who underwent elective surgery 17,18 and parents of a child seen in the cardiology clinic for heart murmurs. 19 As expected, the cross-section of the study population has a high proportion of parents with clinically detectable anxiety.…”

“…This situation may be due to the fact that mothers did not have enough information about the procedures. In a study that investigated the state anxiety levels of parents regarding to magnetic resonance imaging under anesthesia; the average state anxiety scores were 39 in the group who was detailed information, and were 43,6 in the group who was provided information about only the risks of anesthesia (38). In another study that examined parental anxiety before and after surgery; the average state anxiety scores of the mothers were 50,02 before the operation, and were 40,68 after the operation (39).…”
