MAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF VACUUM EVAPORATED Co-O THIN FILM FOR PERPENDICULAR MAGNETIC RECORDING MEDIA

Abstract: A study o~ the microstructure of and the origin of magnetic anisotropy in evaporated Co-O thin film has been carried out. It was found that the strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of Co-O thin film can be attributed to the magnetocrystalline anisotropy along the c-axis preferred orienta tion of Co and the shape anisotropy of each Co particle.

“…For metal evaporated ͑ME͒ tape, the total magnetic anisotropy of the medium has been successfully separated into the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of each particle and the magnetic interaction anisotropy between particles. 12,13,35 The same procedure is applied to determine the origin of the magnetic anisotropy of CoPtCr/SiO 2 granular thin film longitudinal medium. In this article, the intrinsic magnetic anisotropy constants, K u1 and K u2 , are assumed to consist of those of each particle, K u1 (p) and K u2 (p), and those of interparticle interactions, K u1 (i) and K u2 (i).…”

“…There are, however, few reports relating to the recording characteristics of CO-O thin films [2][3][4][5][6], in which the incident angles are changed in a wide range from in-plane direction to perpendicular direction. This paper describes the incident angle dependence of the magnetic properties, the crystallographic structure, morphological structure and the recording characteristics.…”
