Magnetic properties of thin films containing itinerant electrons interacting with localized spins. The problem of Interlayer exchange coupling

Abstract: The model of indirect interaction between localized spins via conduction electrons in thin magnetic films is applied to the calculation of the interlayer exchange coupling parameter. The case of the spacer layer of f.c.c. structure is analyzed in detail. The oscillatory character of the exchange coupling parameter as a function of the spacer thickness as well as of the thickness of the magnetic layer is found for various orientations of the spacer.

“…To calculate the magnetic characteristics of exchange coupled layers described by Hamiltonian (1) we take into account the theoretical dependence of J12 on the spacer thickness d (in number of mοnoatomic planes) obtained on the basis of extended Zener model for the fcc spacer [6]. In the considered model the coupling between spins, belonging to the outmost atomic planes via the conduction electrons in the spacer has been calculated within the Green function formalism in the Hartree-Fock approximation.…”

“…11 The magnetic properties of thin films containing itinerant electrons interacting with localized spins and the problem of interlayer exchange coupling have been considered by Urbaniak-Kucharczyk. 12,13 Calculations are presented within the frame of a Green's-function formalism of the magnetization distribution across the layer and the thickness dependence of the Curie temperature. Gopalan and Cottam 14 have used the s-d interaction model to study the bulk and surface magnetic excitations of a semi-infinite FMS.…”
