Magnetic properties of single crystalline itinerant ferromagnet AlFe2B2

Abstract: Single crystals of AlFe2B2 have been grown using the self flux growth method and then measured the structural properties, temperature and field dependent magnetization, and temperature dependent electrical resistivity at ambient as well as high pressure. The Curie temperature of AlFe2B2 is determined to be 274 K. The measured saturation magnetization and the effective moment for paramagnetic Fe-ion indicate the itinerant nature of the magnetism with a Rhode-Wohlfarth ratio M C M sat ≈ 1.14. Temperature depende… Show more

“…4(b), one can see that all the curves are not straight or parallel even in the high-field region, which suggests that the ideal mean-field theory cannot describe the critical behavior perfectly in FTS. This is not surprising because Coulomb correlation and spin fluctuations are neglected in the mean-field theory, while they can be significant in an itinerant ferromagnet [35]. Moreover, these curves measured around the phase transition temperature provide other information.…”

“…To identify the crystallographic orientation of the AlMn 2 B 2 single crystals, we employed the monochromatic X-ray diffraction from the crystallographic surfaces in the Bragg-Brentano geometry [3,16]. The direction perpendicular to the plate was identified to be [010] since a family of {020} lines were observed in the diffraction pattern as shown in blue curve in Fig.…”

“…AlT 2 B 2 compounds are interesting, specially for potential rare earth free magnetocaloric materials and soft magnetic materials. AlFe 2 B 2 is ferromagnetic and studied for its magneto-caloric and anisotropic magnetic properties [2][3][4]. Understanding the magnetic properties of the neighbouring, isostructural compounds can provide further insight in to the series as well as how to tune the magnetocaloric property of the AlFe 2 B 2 via substitution.…”

“…Pressure values at low temperature were inferred from the T c (p) of lead 29 . Pressure values at higher temperature were estimated by linear interpolation between the room-temperature pressure p 300K and low-temperature pressure p T ≤90K values [30][31][32] . p 300K values were inferred from the 300 K resistivity ratio ρ(p)/ρ(0 GPa) of lead 33 and p T ≤90K values were inferred from the T c (p) of lead 29 .…”
