Magnetic Properties of a Quantum Ferrimagnet: NiCu(pba)(D2O)3·2D2O

Abstract: We report the results of magnetic measurements on a powder sample of NiCu(pba)(D 2 O) 3 ·2D 2 O (pba=1,3-propylenebis(oxamato)) which is one of the prototypical examples of an S=1/2 and 1 ferrimagnetic chain. Susceptibility(χ) shows a monotonous increase with decreasing temperature (T) and reaches a maximum at about 7 K. In the plot of χT versus T , the experimental data exhibit a broad minimum and are fit to the χT curve calculated for the ferrimagnetic Heisenberg chain composed of S=1/2 and 1. From this fit,… Show more

“…Two families of ferrimagnetic chains are described by ACu(pba)(H 2 O) 3 · nH 2 O (pba = 1,3-propylenebis) and ACu(pbaOH)(H 2 O) 3 · nH 2 O (pbaOH = 2-hydroxo-1,3 -propylenebis), where A=Ni, Fe, Co, and Mn [5][6][7]. The cited pioneer studies have stimulated further extensive experimental research on heterometallic and homometallic ferrimagnetic chains [8][9][10][11][12][13]. Another class of ferrimagnetic materials are the so-called topological ferrimagnets.…”

“…1 that χT shows a relatively significant lowtemperature divergence for S > 2s, while it increases relatively rapidly at intermediate temperatures for S < 2s. Brand-new experiments [25,26] are in progress under the current interest. We hope that the second wave of close collaboration between theoretical and experimental investigations will be brought about.…”

“…Ferrimagnets are believed to have a combined effect of both behaviors [4,8,9,17,21,18], ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic. Susceptibility times temperature decreases at low temperature showing a minimum and them starts to increase showing that the antiferromagnetic behavior is not smeared out after the minimum.…”
