Magnetic properties and paleomagnetism of some DSDP leg 33 basalts and sediment and their tectonic implications

Abstract: Paleomagnetic and magnetic property studies have been made on sediments and basalts recovered from holes 315A (northern Line Island chain) and 317A (Manihiki Plateau) during leg 33 of the Deep‐Sea Drilling Project (DSDP). The purpose of this investigation is twofold: (1) to investigate the magnetic properties of basalts from holes 315A and 317A and (2) to determine the origin of the inclination discrepancy between hole 317A carbonate and hole 317A basalt as reported by Cockerham and Jarrard [1976]. Basalts cor… Show more

“…Low-Ti TM has been reported from deep-buried oceanic lavas [30] and from postulated shallow-water extrusives [24,31] . The variation of magnetic properties across the Taimyr igneous rocks is not only due to grain-size variations, but also due to the concentration of magnetic minerals.…”

“…Many papers already published allow a good estimate of the magnitude of the remanent magnetization camed by cores. Dunlop & Hale (1976) found magnetization intensitites ranging from 0.5 to 4.5 A m-' near the mid-Atlantic Ridge, Deutsch & Patzold (1976) from 0.1 to 4 A m-' in the Pacific Ocean, Cokerham & Hall (1976) up to 5 A m -' in the Pacific and Prevot et al (1979) and Smith-Daignieres (1984) between 4 and 14 A m-' near the crest of the mid-Atlantic Ridge. The induced magnetization which must be added to these values does not greatly change the order of magnitude.…”

“…In fact, the induced magnetization is often non-neglible with L. Daly and A . Tabbagh respect to the total magnetization, and values of the Koenigsberger ratio as low as 1 are common (Deutsch & Patzold 1976;Cokerham & Hall 1976).…”

“…The oldest ~, planktonic foraminifera are of the lower Aptian Leupoldina cabri Zone and are separated from basement bv nearlv 250 m of volcaniclastic rocks. In neither the sediments nor in the ten flows penetrated by drilling has reversed polarity chron MO been identified (23,(52)(53). A thin layer rich in organic carbon in the volcaniclastic rocks has been tentatively correlated with the Selli level (46) (Fig.…”
